Laketown Rich CO Utah
Dear cousin, I once more lift the pen to scratch you afew words. We are all
well at present and hope that this may find you all well and enjoying yourselfs. You spoke in your letter, which we received today that as if you had not got our letter, the answer to your last letter. We wrote some time ago and
was expecting an answer. Mother and Father went over to Laketown today. I have been to two partys this winter and to quite afew other amusements, Well francis I wish you would come out here. I think you would enjoy yourself, the young men and ladys are very sociable out here. We have not had a letter from Mary for sometime, the last we jeard she was well. Fathers horses have been sick with a disease called the pink eye, they have been real bad, but they are getting much better. He has been to Evenston once this fall, he generally makes four trips but the horses took sick so he has only made one trip yet. The folks talk of having a nice time on Christmas. They will have a party on this Christmas eve. O hope they will have a nice time.
Francis I told you in my other letter that a young couple had gone to Salt Lake to get married. They have got back and when they were coming afew of the boys went to meet them and they had a runaway and the wagon was loaded with furniture, their was a stove and a table, bedstead and rocking chair and they were all broke. It was quite a joke on them. You said that you wanted me to write and tell you when I was going to get married, but I cannot tell you for I do not know myself and as for your girl she was well today when mother was over she still waiting for you,she is very pasaint.
Well I guess I have wrote more than you will want to read so I will close my nonsense.
From your cousin,Barbara M>Murphy
To Francis M>Murphy, write soon, good night.
P>S?Tell Grandma that we still think of her and that we send our love to her.Hoping that she is well this night,I will close, goodbye.
Barbara has commenced this letter and I will write afew words of you have the patience to read it. She has told you of our health and all the news in general, but I must show my good will by writing alittle. Why does your father and mother never write to us nor any of the relatives but you,is it because we live in Utah, so what can be the matter. Samuel never writes nor any of his children,V>Collier nor his children,Joseph nor his children, nor Georges sisters. It makes me feel that we are alone in this wide world. It would not but little trouble to them and it would be great comfort to us.
Life is arugged and difficult path but with a few friendly words received occassionaly it is like a little heaven in every deed. There is but little going on here this winter for amusement or profit. No school either here or Laketown, the young men hold meetings and the young ladies hold meeting about once a week and once in four weeks they hold a co-joint meeting for the improvement of all concerned. There is to be a party in Laketown Tuesday evening, music from Woodruff,Mr.Putnam.You are having a good time I suppose with your relatives. I am glad to hear from them even in that way,but
would be much better pleased if they could afford to write to us. We have not heard from Mary for nearly a month. I am uneasy Theordore was digging a well when they wrote and I am afraid that he has got hurt is the reason that they do not write. They are not very far from us but the snow is so deep in the moutains that we could not get there. There will be no chance to get through till sometime in June next, and then it is dangerous on account of high water. Did you have good crops in Ohio last harvest and how was the crops in Pennsylvania and Indiana and as to Utah there was good crops of wheat considering what we sowed but our potatoes was a failure. I beleive I have told you all that I think would be entertaining to you so I will close, I do not think that you will be able to read it, the baby has been shaking my hand and pushing my paper away from me since I have been writing beside. I am in a hurry for I have to write a letter to Salt Lake City yet tonight hoping that this will find you all well and that you will write again soon.I subbscribe myself.
Your Aunt,
Mrs.Miranda Murphy.
Aunt Elisa I thought I would send you this letter so you would know where to direct your letters.
Frank Murphy

Union County Family Heritage Book 1985
In 1835 my Great Grandfather, Dr. Joseph N. Ross, a veteran of the war 1812, came to Richwood from Zanesville, Ohio, Muskingum County. He traveled here in a large wagon with all his earthly possessions, household goods and children. His children were all born in Holmes County, Ohio, his wife died there and is buried in that County.
Dr. Ross was the second physician to locate in Richwood. He moved into a log house, here he made his home as well as his office. In 1985 finds the house still standing at 127 North franklin Street, it has been enlarged, modernized and sided.
21, October 1858, Mout carmel Lodge #303 was chartered and organized, 9, November 1858 in the second floor of this log house of Dr. Ross.
Dr. Ross rode a large white stallion to make his house calls, he delivered babies for a fee of $5.00. Sometimes in place of money, which not many had, he took his pay in hay, corn, oats and straw for his horse and bags of potatoes, cabbage, apples, sometimes chickens and eggs for his family.
During his parctice there was an epidemic fever, which was particularly severe in the Essex community. When his patients died Dr. Ross would place their bodies in a spring wagon and take them down along a creek and bury them. This spot is now known as the old Cheney Cemetery, but is no longer in use. After the epidemic he burned the wagon.
The Headly family lived on Bumptown Road, now known as Landon Pike, this was great grandpa Isaac and his wife Sarah. They had several children, one was Nancy who married J. Alexander Ross, son of Dr. Ross. Nancy and Alexander settled on Bumptown Road and had three children, Laura, who married L. O. Slemmons; Lawrence E. who was killed in a hunting accident, 18th december, 1878 and Imogene who married Lewis Sayre.
Imogene and Lewis had a daughter, Nancy who married Arthur Rouse. They were the parents of one son jack. jack married Joyce Ramsey and they had a daughter Cathy and a son Terry.
Dr. Joseph Ross practiced medicine until his dath in 1869. He is buried in Stony Point Cemetery on the Zook Road North of Claibourne.
Dr. Ross married a second time and had two sons by Elizabeth Murphy. One son, my great Uncle Joe, lived in the log house until his death. He was agreat guy. always had a sack of candy for me when he came to visit my parents. He played the fiddle for dances, for entertainments and for the pleasure of his family and friends.
I still have a large straight high backed chair with arms, the one on the right being ringed in the center so it may be raised or lowered. When raised it makes a writing desk. My Uncle Joe used this chair and now I use it each day as it sits by my telephone. This was one of the earthly possessions that my great grandfather brought to Richwood.

Boyd Cooksey,35, nephew of B.F.McCrary, was seriously injured last Friday while braking on the Erie and Western. He was thrown between two cars, his right arm being crushed, his chin badly torn and a hole cut in his head exposing the brain. He was taken to Celina hospital and walked into the building unaided from the automobile. His arm was amputated and unless complications from his other wounds arise, he has a fair chance of rcovery.
Some years ago Mr Cooksey gained no little notoriety by capturing two bank robbers on his train. Mr Cooksey who lives in Lima, heard of the robbery of a jewelry store and on his way to work obtained a discription of the thieves. He later found the two men on his train and single handed captured them and turned them over to officers.
