Aunt Eliza Called To Her Eternal Reward. A Pioneer Of Claibourne Township.
Mrs. Elizabeth Ross, better known as "Aunt Eliza" was called to her eternal home on Saturday afternoon, after intense suffering from the infirmities of old age for almost two years.
She was born In Westmoreland Co.,Pa., February 8, 1822 and brought by her parents to this community in 1836. She was united in marriage to Joseph N. Ross in 1841 and to them were born four children, two sons and two daughters.
Both daughters died in infancy. The husband deceased, died on December 31, 1869, leaving a widow and two sons to mourn the loss of a kind husband and provident father.
Aunt Eliza was known by everybody in this township, having lived in this vicinity for over forty years. She leaves a wide circle of relatives and friends to mourn her departure. Many indeed were the deeds and acts of kindness performed by her in this community. frequent were the calls made upon her by the neighbors for help and service in case of sickness and death, and in no instance is she known to have refused or failed to respond when it was possible for her to do so. Her heart was a tender and sympathatic one, unselfish in her motive, liberal in kindness and generous even to a fault. Her hospatility is widely known and spoken of highly and favorably by all who known her and peculiarly a cheerful disposition made her and her home objects of attractions. Many indeed have come to her with their tales of woe and have been greatly benefitted by her wise council and sound judgement. But also, her tongue has ceased to talk; her eyes have closed to earthly scenes; her heart has ceased to beat; she is numbered now among the departed, but her memory will be cherished by a large host of admiring and sorring friends."Aunt Eliza's" name and memory will long be in the heart and memories of the people of this community and her voice, her smile and her presence will indeed be greatly missed, especially in her home and by her neighbors.
The funeral took place on Monday, may 26, at her late home on North main Street, and was conducted by Rev. J.W. James, assisted by Rev. n.A. Shedd, a very large number of citizens assembled on the occasion to pay a tribute of respect to her remains and cherish sacredly her memory. For the past year she has been afflicted and receiving special attention from her kindred, yet the untiring and uncomplaining service of love rendered her by her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Anna Ross, deserves unqualified, commendation, and she has truly sacrifieced her oun comforts for her mother and thus is worthy of distingguished praise for her devotion and christ like spirit and disposition.
She always responded and with much delight
She helped those in trouble in day or at night;
Unselfish in spirit she worked not for praise
She ministered mercy in many kind ways;
Her hands are now folded, her last act is done,
Her days have been numbered, her race has been run;
God bless the grief stricken and teach them to live.
And by his grace, lead them, their hearts to Christ way.

this is some of the things written about her in her obituary;
The deceased was one of the early pioneers of this vicinity and knew many of the hardships of early days. She was a good christian wife and mother and was loved by all who knew her, the old as well as the young. She loved her home and home life and was usually found at her post of duty in the home. Although of a quiet and unassuming disposition she was very loveable and had a sweet disposition, making friends wherever she went.
She had been an invalid for 8 years,but had only been confined to her bed since last April. Although she had been a very great sufferer she never complained but always patieny and cheerful during her long illness.

ROSS------HEADLY
In 1835 my great Grandfather, Dr. Joseph N. Ross, a veteran of the war 1812, came to Richwood from Zanesville,Ohio, Muskingum County. He traveled here in a large wagon with all his earthly possessions, household goods and children. His children were all born in Holmes County,Ohio, his wife died there and is buried in that county.
Dr. Ross was the second physician to locate in Richwood. He moved onto a log house, here he made his home as well as his office. In 1985 finds the house still standing at 127 North Franklin Street, it has been enlarged, modernized and sided.
21, October, 1858, Mount Carmel Lodge #303 was chartered and organized, 9,November 1858 in the second floor of this log house of Dr. Ross.
Dr. Ross rode a large white stallion to make his house calls,he delivered babies for a fee of $5.00. Sometimes in place of money, which not many had, he took his pay in hay, corn,oats and straw for his horse and bags of potatoes, cabbage, apples, sometimes chickens and eggs for his family.
During his pactirce there was an epidemic fever, which was particularly severe in the Essex community. When his patients died Dr. Ross would place their bodies in a spring wagon and take them down along a creek and bury them. This spot is now known as the old Cheney Cemetery, but is no longer in use. After the epidemic he burned the wagon.
The Headly family lived on Bumpton road, now known as Landon Pike, this was great grandpa Isaac and his wife Sarah. They had several children, one was Nancy who married J. Alexander Ross, son of Dr. Ross. Nancy and Alexander settled on Bumptown Road and had three children, Laura, who married L.O. Slemmons; Lawrence E. who was killed in a hunting accident, 18th, December 1878 and Imogene who married Lewis Sayre.
Imogene and Lewis had a daughter, Nancy who married Arthur Rouse. They were parents of one son Jack. Jack married Joyce Ramsey and they had a daughter Cathy and a son Terry.
Dr. Joseph Ross practiced medicine until his death in 1869. He is buried in Stony Point Cemetery on the Zook Road North of Claibourne.
Dr. Ross married the second time and had two sons by Elizabeth Murphy. One son, my great Uncle Joe, lived in the log house until his death. He was a great guy, always had a sack of candy for me when he came to visit my parents. He played the fiddle for dances, for entertainments anf dor the pleasure of his family and friends.
I still have a large straight high back chair with arms, the one on the right being ringed in the center so it maybe raised or lowered. When raised it makes a writing desk. My Uncle Joe used this chair and now I use it each day as it sits by my telephone. This was one of the earthly possessions that my great grandfather brought to Richwood.

A Circleville, Ohio, special to the Ohio State Journal dated September 15, says "Joseph Murphy, aged 45, a contractor of the firm of Murphy and Kohbarger of Marion, and Charles thomas, aged 37 years, of this city were killed by sewer gas in a manhole here today. Howard Kelly of this city was overcome, but was later revived.
Murphy went into the manhole to remove a bulkhead. He was overcome by the poisonous gas and Kelly went in to his aid. Kelly was pulled from the manhole in an unconscious condition. Then Thomas attempted to rescue Murphy, but was suffocated before help reached him. Both Murphy and Thomas were married.
Joe Murphy was formerly a resident of Richwood. He was a son of James Murphy who formwerly resided in Claibourne. From Claibourne he moved to Richwood and from this place he went to Marion several years ago. He started in business as a farm tile ditcher, but had developed into quite a prominent sewer contractor. He did all the sewer work in Richwood and the most of it in Marion.
The Bomford Street sewer contract was let to Mr. Murphy sometime since and it is still uncompleted. He leaves his wife and two daughters who reside in Marion.
