Note: John was a civil engineer with the Santa Fe Railroad making serveral trips into the Indian country locating routes and later serving as chief engineer of the construction crew. In the capacity, in 1872, he reached and laid out the town in central Kansas which bears his name Ellinwood, Kansas.
