Note: Durward enlisted for foreigh service in 1938, was shipped at once to the Philippines, where he became Sgt. in the 21st Infantry. He was captured on Corregidor and survived the Death March. He was a P.O.W. for two and a half years, losing his life October 1944 in the South China Sea when three Japanese ships were destroyed by U.S. Submarines. but the ships were not flying P.O.W. flags as required by the Geneva Convention.
