On Saturday, August 18th, two little girls were playing on a raft at Brenton. The raft by some means broke adrift from the shore. The (p.469) eldest jumped off and successded in reaching the shore in safety, although the water was almost beyond her depth. The other little girl, Alice, 10 years of Silas Pennell, also jumped off, but as the raft had drifted farther away the water was much deeper and she was drowned before assistance could reach the scene. The accident was almost a mile from any house.
