Ellinwood, Giles Warren {I02685} (b. 24 APR 1830, d. 10 MAR 1905)
Note: From Eastport, Washington Co., ME, Giles and wife Alice came to California around Cape Horn on a sailing vessel to San Francisco in 1857. Settlement was first made in Santa Cruz, where Giles followed ranching, after which for a time he worked at his trade of cooper in the Spreckels Sugar Refinery in San Francisco.
In 1879 he came to Ferndale and erected a cooper shop, making a specialty of the manufacture of better kegs and fish barrels, and won the reputation of being the best cooper in the county.

Giles Ellingwood taught the cooperage business to his oldest son Benjamin and turned the business over to his son before 1900. He then went into the patent medicine business and was manager of the Common Sense Medicine Company of Los Angles, at the time of his death.

Ellinwood, Marshall Alden {I02984} (b. 15 OCT 1831, d. 9 SEP 1898)
Note: Marshall A. Ellingwood was born in Washington County, Maine, in 1830.
He apprenticed himself to a sea captain at the age of 14. Nine years later, he was himself captain of the "Robert Reed" on a transatlantic voyage.
In 1861 he was in command of the "Santa Clara" when it was captured by
the Confederate privateer "Jeff Davis". He also commanded the "Christina",the "Jennie Ellingwood" (named for his wife) and the "Joe Katon". He left the sea in 1870 and settled on a 120 acre farm in Lima, Wisconsin. He had married Jane Pendleton in 1852. Their children were: Clarence A.,and Charles V.
